Travis Hayes

My architectural background is well-grounded. At a young age, I started working at construction sites during school breaks and summers, picking up debris, becoming familiar with the construction process and materials. It continued after high school, where I worked full-time in construction, on custom residential and light commercial projects until I started my college education.

Earning my associates degree in architecture in San Diego, I worked my way through college, moonlighting for a couple of architects on residential projects. I also worked on graphics and manufacturing for Silence snowboards, which afforded me the snow lifestyle I had grown up with. It also brought to light the fabrication and industrial edge I possess today.

Following my time in San Diego, I transferred to a prominent "high design" architecture school in southern California, SCI-Arc--one of the top schools in the world for creative approach. While there, I worked for a design-build firm, assisting with contemporary residential projects in Venice Beach. I also performed work study for SCI-Arc facilities management, remodeling our spaces as needed.

I later transferred to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, one of the top schools in the nation for fundamental, practical architectural approach, where I received my Bachelor of Arts. After earning my degree, I stayed in San Luis Obispo where I worked for a local architect, Kornreich Architects. As project manager, I was responsible for residential spaces, including ocean-view houses; remodels; commercial tenant improvements; light commercial; wineries; restaurant spaces and historic properties.

In 2004, I relocated to San Francisco where I worked with a small firm as a project manager, specializing in high-end single- and multi-family residential spaces in San Francisco and throughout California. Project types ranged from conventional Victorian cottage, to traditional Queen Ann Victorian, to a modern "Eichler" residential remodel that was published in Renovation Style.

After a few years, I moved on to a modern progressive firm--that housed a metal fabrication shop all under the same roof. Our focus was high-end design that came to full fruition by fabricating elements to enhance spaces. Not only was I responsible for designing the architecture of a space, I also designed custom features including doors, vanity stands, light fixtures and more. My construction background and fabrication skills gave me the ability to seamlessly follow projects through every stage of the process. On a pure architectural level, these skills gave me the ability to understand how buildings are constructed, which aides in the decisions I make during the design and construction process.

Most recently, after nearly ten years' work experience following my eduction, and fueled by my extreme passion for my craft, I took the plunge and formed Hayes Architecture. Marrying the two educational approaches of creativity and fundamental practicality, I believe that form follows function, and envision a world that is more pleasing through architecture and design.

What's more, I believe in design that can stand the test of time. We all share in the responsibility of how our tomorrow is shaped. And through my experience and intimate knowledge of materials, I design solutions that are aesthetically pleasing, while kind to the environment.

I love what I do. I'm passionate and precise. I'm honest. I take for granted my ability to see what some may not. I believe in creating strong, professional, trusting relationships with my clients. Let's see if I can help you.
